IKEA Malm bed

$179.99 Released January, 2005

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Very simple, contemporary design. Easy to assemble and disassemble. Affordable.

The Cons:Laminate can start to peel off. The bed collapsed in less than a year, shitty wood. There's very little clearance between the mattress and the frame, so if you pick the lowest height for the platform it's hard to make the bed.

An aesthetically pleasing, straight-line, classic Scandinavian design. The assembly is straightforward and instructions easy to read. It comes in several veneer color finishes and starts at a $99 for a single and $199 for King size.

Product Shot 2 Because of this low price and the broad appeal of IKEA, this bed is a very popular choice. Some owners have complained of knocking their shins on the frame because of it's low unorthodox profile.

Anonymous: To Anonymous - As much as I hate grammar and spelling mistakes, I think in this case your comments were not necessary. I am on this page looking for comments about beds I am considering purchasing from Ikea. His comment was what I needed to know, and it did not make any change in my buying decision based on his spelling. Now if there are words spelled wrong in public - you better believe I am calling someone about it. And I must add, your first comment to him did not start with the appropriate capital letter or ending punctuation ... so you might want to hurry or you will be late for that class. :) Sep 17, 11

Rick
Rick: #ikea_malm_bed Inexpensive, but requires the slats and the steel center support which is extra. The plastic laminate surface is very delicate, so you will scratch it if you drag your box spring across the surface while you are trying to position it into place. Metal end supports are very weak. Box spring has already fallen through on one end already and bent the metal. I don't recommend moving the bed with the mattress in place because it will weaken the joints. The entire bed is made of LDF particleboard so its not very durable. The HOPEN end tables look good with the bed as long as you can get them in the same color. Feb 14, 11

Anonymous: #ikea_malm_bed I am interested in knowing if the mattress for the Malm series was purchased through IKEA or did folks go to an outside vendor. I am looking for the best place to buy a comfortable mattress for a reasonable price. While I realize that there are chains, specifically, the location is Emory in Atlanta. Should anybody answer from that area and have a specific mattress place recommendation, I would appreciate that. Dec 5, 10

Wittfiji: #ikea_malm_bed I purchased this bed and a brand new mattress from ikea about a year ago. I enjoyed putting it together, love how it looks and think its good product, but i do have one major concern...

I put the mattress directly on top of the slats (no box spring) and have began noticing a significant dip in the middle of the mattress. I do sleep in the middle of the bed, but I weigh only 175 lbs. I've tried flipping the mattress on its other side, but it does the same thing...telling me that its an issue with the setup (not me).

Is anyone else out there experiencing this? Do you all put the mattress directly on the slats or do you use a box spring/mattress combo?

This has really been bothering me and I've been considering selling it on craigslist (although I do like it), so I would really appreciate any suggestions on the matter! Thanks! Feb 28, 10

cdpage
cdpage: #ikea_malm_bed Squeakiness - minimal, but there is some.. it 'could' get worse over time though.

Solid build - Yes,

Dents in your shins - Yes!!! (Now its our spare)

Two height options for the mattress - We go with the higher one, though it looks nicer in the lower position, it sucks changing the sheets as it'll hurt your knuckles

Quality - questionable - Don't think the laminate surface will stay for ever. I its near a window, expect it to peel, if you have it on carpet, you might rip some off while moving it.

it's Cheap, but is it worth it? probably... Jan 4, 10

Anonymous: my mattresses are doing the same thing, splitting in the middle. We bought the king size bed and had to get two twin mattresses and every night they split apart. They didn's used to do that. Is there a trick to keeping them together? (We bought ours in Germany so they dont' sell king size mattresses only two twin size mattresses.) Mar 7, 11

MFox
MFox: #ikea_malm_bed This bed is adjustable, so that if you use a box spring, it can sit lower, giving you more of a headboard.

A note of caution - they told us that if you use a boxspring, the slats are not needed. YOU NEED THE SLATS. Our Boxspring fell through, and is pretty much ruined as a result of the lack of support. Feb 17, 09

random: #ikea_malm_bed I have the IKEA Malm bed in black/brown and we use a sleep number bed with a foundation (basically a box spring). In addition to the bed, you need to also buy a $10 midbeam. Although cheap, it is essential!

With a box spring and mattress, you don't have much of a headboard - maybe 4 or 5 inches from the higher setup and 8 or 9 inches from the lower one. With the setup, you have to pay incredibly close attention to the instructions. There are little things, that are easy to miss (such as putting small screws and plastic washers that go into two of about a dozen holes on a part) and end up making the difference between sleeping well and crashing to the floor due to missing part of a step.

My wife and I purchased the malm bed frame for about $200 and opted for cheaper nightstands (rather than their $200 nightstands that run the width of the bed. If I could go back and do it again, I would buy the malm nightstands and use a normal, $30 metal bed frame with the mattress and box spring Jan 25, 09

username
username: #ikea_malm_bed The bed is fine, but the "IKEA Direct" method is extremely unforgiving. I bought the bed, which is fine, but it is longer than wider, and I must turn my bed wider than longer or I cannot walk through my room.
I paid $229 for the bed, $130 to ship it here (dumb, but I had no other options: no one with car, no time to run to store & pay for car service). To return it costs $100!! So I will have paid more than the price of the bed, and have no bed after all this mess...just $230 to the shipping company.
So, measure carefully, or it will cost you! Sep 19, 08

Dennis B: The Malm is a platform bed. Platform beds use slats which give some flexibility and support the mattress. No box spring is used.  It may be possible though, I have no first hand experience but it was mentioned elsewhere that the bed had height adjustments.

dennis broadway: #ikea_malm_bed i was wondering if anyone knew if the bed base was necessary if you have a boxspring, or if the boxspring would essentially act as the base? i cant tell from the website, but it looks like having a mattress and box spring would make the bed high enough that the headboard would essentially disappear? i have a queen mattress & boxspring already, so if possible i just want to get the frame, not the base. thanks for any responses! dakalvia: #ikea_malm_bed I have been sleeping in this bed for about 3 years. Have disassembled and reassembled it during a move, and have had no problems with it at all. No squeakiness, rattling, shaking, etc......very sturdy frame. I have the birch finish.

To Jacinda M: Beds frames (as well as mattresses) come in different sizes/widths. Single, double, queen, and king. Make sure you buy the same size frame as your mattress. I think the Ikea Malm comes in different sizes...check on the Ikea website. Feb 28, 08

FE
FE: #ikea_malm_bed This bed was originally designed by Philipp Mainzer for (e15) a German furniture and architectural design firm known for modern solid wood furniture. The original bed is called SL02 MO, it is made in solid oak, and can be seen on e15.com.
I am very sad and angry that IKEA has copied the design of this bed, knowing full well that e15 is too small to fight it. This bed is probably their best selling bed...i have lost alot of respect for IKEA, because they pride themselves for originality and credit their designers. In this case, they are laughing all the way to the bank copying work without paying any fees for using the design, while e15 works hard to make it to the next level. Jan 27, 08

Jacinda M.: #ikea_malm_bed We just bought the Malm bed in dark brown from IKEA. I love the design, but it did not fit our king size mattress. What is the deal with that? Shouldn't it be a standard size frame to fit mattresses from other maker's as well? does anyone know? Dec 11, 07

David: #ikea_malm_bed This is one of IKEA's sturdiest beds. I've had multiple friends go to IKEA and try out all the beds. The Malm is the sturdiest wood bed IKEA currently makes according to them (the metal frame beds are also sturdy). So don't waste your money on other wooden IKEA beds (it comes in at least 3 different colours as well). Aug 25, 06
