Devo Energy Dome
$36.00
Released January, 1981
The Pros:Look like Devo! Whip it good!
The Cons:Expensive for a piece of plastic. Very hard to find.
The ENERGY DOME is the red terraced hat worn by the new-wave band Devo in the 1980s and in any perforamance since 1997. The traditional Energy Dome is red, although Devo have worn many variants (white, blue, chrome, green, grey, clear, black).
Devo's famous video for "Whip It" features the classic red Energy Dome. True Energy Domes are sold through Club Devo (fan club), but several costume companies also sell unofficial Energy Domes. The "real" Energy Dom has raised text on the top spelling "DEVO".
According to Gerald Casale on the Devo website: "It was designed according to ancient ziggaurat mound proportions used in votive worship. Like the mounds it collects energy and recirculates it. In this case the Dome collects energy that escapes from the crown of the human head and pushes it back into the Medula Oblongata for increased mental energy. It's very important that you buy a cheap plastic hardhat liner, adjust it to your head size and affix it with duct tape or Super Glue to the inside of the Dome. This allows the Dome to "float" just above the cranium and thus do its job. Unfortunately, sans hard hat liner, the recirculation of energy WILL NOT occur."
